What is Youth On Board?

Youth on Board (YOB) offers high school students a unique opportunity to learn how to become effective board members in the non-profit community. At the same time, students will contribute valuable insight about the needs of youth in our community. YOB is sponsored by Leadership Howard County with generous support from The Horizon Foundation.

Benefits

  • Students learn through interactive training and actual experience.
  • Students participate in the decision-making process on issues facing our community-especially those that impact youth in our community.
  • Boards have the benefit of incorporating the youth perspective in their planning and decision-making.

Program Components

  • Classroom Training - 15 hours of interactive training to include board roles & responsibilities, fundraising, parliamentary procedure, finances & budget, ethics, and strategies for success. Saturday, March 20, 2010 (9-3); Wednesday, April 14, 2010 (5:00 - 8:30); and Thursday, April 22, 2010 (5:00 - 8:30) - Attendance is required at all sessions.

  • Board Placement- students will be matched up with boards based on mutual interest and availability.

  • Mentoring - a "Board Buddy" from the non-profit organization will be identified to serve as a resource and guide for each youth board member.

Commitment

Students will serve on a board of directors or committee of a non-profit organization for a one year term. Students are expected to attend all board meetings and participate on an active committee, special project or activity (approx. 3-5 hours per month). Students will attend bimonthly meetings with Youth on Board staff.

Qualifications

Students must have demonstrated leadership experience, be a current high school sophomore or junior and live in Howard County. Were looking for: leadership ability, concern for your community, interest in working with non-profit organizations.

Cost

None--thanks to the generous support of The Horizon Foundation and Leadership Howard County.

" My involvement with Leadership Howard County has been one of my most rewarding experiences. The educational component and the sustained camaraderie that I've enjoyed both with my class and the other wonderful graduates have made this an invaluable opportunity."
